Preparing for 2018 Season - Seeking your feedback

    Guys,

    I need your help.

I want to prep my boat for the new season and this is what i'm thinking of doing to my 496HO/B1s setup:

    1. Change engine oil & lower units
    2. Replace shift bellows
    3. replace hydraulic hoses
    4. replace sea pumps
    5. and lube the throttle shifters.

    Here is my question:

Is there a recommendation to go with 'upgraded' / 'performance' parts or should I stick to the original brands (quicksilver, mercruiser). Question is for oil, sea pumps, bellows, etc..

    Thank you in advance!

Oil.. I was using VR1 straight 40w racing due to high zinc content, switching to 20w50 racing to try synthetic. racing oil typically have higher zinc and phosphorus content which is an anti-wear additive for extreme duty. Its regulated by API in automotive oils an reduced these additives.

Lube, old drive, dont skimp, I like Royal purple max gear.

Shift bellows: quicksilver, sierra, all same crap. Have fun, I just did one without pulling helmet!

Hyd. Hoses.. go stainless if rubber. Good otherwise unless corroded.

Seapumps: found mine on ebay for $46 ea! Slight blemish, but who cares! Will never see again until
    you pull back off.

Lube cables? Why if they are stiff you need to replace, lubing cant get down far and needs replacing if stiff anyway before they break.

I agree... Only the highest quality full synthetics for your very expensive engines and drives. There are plenty to choose from. Just as an example, Iím using 20W/50 Mobile1 in the 454 Mag and Amsoil 75W/90 Marine in the drive. Both get changed at the end of season if it needs it or not.

My personal opinion over the years for boots, impellers and hoses has been OEM. Mercury / Quicksilver. Iíve tried them all, but the OEM stuff fits better and lasts longer. YMMV....

I agree again with Nailit, that if the cables are stiff, change them. Thereís no saving them.
