    496 Stroker

We, my back yard mechanic buddy and I, just replaced his 96 454/330 hp, with a new 454 bored and stroked 496/425 HP engine....Anyone have any history with this engine....We have not put in the water as of yet...course runs good on the hose.... We installed it into a 96 23 Baja Outlaw......

    Thanks---Mike Tampa Bay.........

Who built the motor? Cam choice is what you have to look out for in building Marine motors unless you decide to run dry exhaust.

Scalded Dawg run a stroked 496 with a Whipple.

Atlantic Marine...Miami area...he bought it online/phone....Does not need dry exhaust (mine did) and runs on reg gas.....If I am correct, the 454 stroker is not the same block as a few years ago when Merc was installing 496 375 and 425 HP engines....??? I thought they stopped building that block... So I,m thinking the 454 w/stroker kit is a different motor...???? I maybe wrong.....Hopefully it will b a good motor .....we still have not sea tested it yet....He is in Tenn buying hunting land..hahaha....

    Thanks....Mike..Tampa Bay

The Merc 496 was a gen 7 big block, which is basically an LS small block design in a big block motor. Even the heads of the 496 shared the same cathedral intake runners as the small block. The unbelievable success of the small block eliminated any need for big blocks. Your motor is a gen 4, 5, or 6. My 525sc in my boat is a gen 5 454, with 088 heads and a very low 7½ to 1 compression ratio. Very cool u guys doing that build 💪
