Trim up not working without trailer switch

Took the boat out the first time after many upgrades and the trim on the throttle and dash isn't working to trim the drives without pushing the "trailer" button as well so I'm guessing it's something to do with the trim limit switches which durring my upgrades I only removed the transom assembly not the trim limit switches so not sure why they would have went bad. Anyone got any ideas?

I found the wire for the trim limit switch wires they are there I can't seem to find the wires on the engine/helm side. I'm sure on my 496's they where in the wiring harness for the boat, but I may be incorrect on this.

Re: Trim up not working without trailer switch

Well figured out that the wires I thought I needed hooked up I didn't they are for the trim senders which I have mechanical indicators so they aren't used.

Still have a issue with not being able to trim up drives without using "trailer button" I can't believe both trim limit switches went bad together. I'm guessing I knocked something loose while doing the mods this winter and it's causing a issue. Only thing I can think is when I was pulling the cables for the trim indicators to get them longer for the boxes I pulled on a wire and pulled it loose?

Re: Trim up not working without trailer switch

Finally figured out why it's not working although I don't know how to fix it.

Apparently Mercury puts the transom harness in with a Medusa of harnesses then it all goes into the main haness. I just can't figure out where I need to hook in the purple wire from that harness to over ride the trim limit switch. It lights up the test light when trimming up but the circuit isn't completed so no trim. Someone has to have ran into this repowering.

    HELP!!!!!

Re: Trim up not working without trailer switch

Figured out which wires in the transom harness to make it work without trim limit. (blue/white and green/white) jumper these 2 wires and it bypasses trim limit switch.

This would only apply when switching from a 496 8.1L to bigger power that would use HD Transom Assemblies.

I am having same problem right now but I didn't change anything. The Trailor button works but the throttle and regular button on dash not moving my drive. What did you find out?

Yours sounds like a bad trim limit switch...

Where would that be located? On the trim motor itself or the drive? Easy to change?

I's on transom assembly on the left side where the gimbal helmet hinges are. You can test it by loosening both screws and turning it while someone pushes switch. Mark where it's at prior to doing this in case this is not your issue. If you turn it full one way and it works your limit switch is bad. If you have mechanical experience you could change it yourself you have to feed wires through transom assembly up through transom.

Be careful your not dealing with Digital switches. Ran into that with a 29OL with HO's we did motors in last year. You have to set them according to the processor. Talk about a bad day.
